2 Crore New Small & Mid Cap Investors in Two Years β€” What Does the Stability Data Actually Show?

Mid and small cap fund folios have surged 40-66% since 2024 despite repeated valuation warnings. Here's what FundMatrix stability data shows happening underneath that growth.

The numbers making headlines this week are striking. According to data compiled by ICRA Analytics from AMFI disclosures, mid-cap mutual fund folios have surged 66% β€” from 1.53 crore in June 2024 to 2.55 crore in June 2026. Small-cap fund folios rose more than 40% over the same period, from 2.03 crore to 2.87 crore. Together, these two categories now account for over 32% of all open-ended equity mutual fund folios in India.

This growth has continued despite repeated warnings about stretched valuations in both segments. Monthly SIP inflows into mid-cap and small-cap funds have each averaged roughly β‚Ή4,777 Cr over the past year β€” steady, not slowing.

The commentary around this data has focused, reasonably, on valuation risk: are these categories priced for a level of growth that may not materialise? That's a legitimate question, but it's not the one FundMatrix is built to answer. A different, complementary question is just as important: while more money and more investors have poured into these categories, has the underlying stability of the funds themselves improved, stayed flat, or deteriorated?

The data gives a clear answer.

What FundMatrix Stability Data Shows

Looking at Direct Growth funds across Small Cap, Mid Cap, and Large Cap categories, tracked weekly on FundMatrix:

CategoryAvg Stability NowAvg Stability 1Y AgoYoY ChangeFunds in High+ Band
Small Cap Fund50.259.7πŸ”΄ -9.40 of 23
Mid Cap Fund55.763.3πŸ”΄ -7.60 of 30
Large Cap Fund53.561.8πŸ”΄ -8.40 of 31

Every category has declined meaningfully over the past year β€” not just small and mid cap, but large cap too, by a comparable or even larger margin. More strikingly, not a single Direct Growth fund across any of these three categories currently sits in the High or Exceptional stability band. A year ago, several funds in each category did.

This is not a small-cap-specific story. It's a broad-based decline in stability across Indian equity funds of every size, happening at exactly the moment retail participation in the higher-volatility end of that spectrum has accelerated the most.

Reading this correctly

A falling average stability score across a whole category doesn't mean every fund in it is performing badly, and it isn't a prediction of returns. The FundMatrix Stability Score measures consistency β€” how reliably a fund's returns, drawdowns, and risk-adjusted performance have held up across rolling periods β€” not whether the category will go up or down from here.

What it does tell you is this: the environment funds have been operating in over the past year has been less consistent than the year before, across large, mid, and small cap alike. Small cap's steeper decline (-9.4 vs -8.4 for large cap) is consistent with what you'd expect structurally β€” smaller companies see more volatile earnings and price action β€” but the fact that large cap funds, generally considered the most stable corner of equity investing, saw an even larger absolute score than mid cap over the same period is worth sitting with.

The disconnect worth naming

Folio growth and AUM growth measure participation. They tell you how many people are buying and how much money is flowing in. They say nothing about whether the funds those investors are buying have become more or less consistent over the same window.

Right now, those two data sets are moving in opposite directions for small and mid cap funds: participation up 40-66% over two years, category-average stability down meaningfully over just the last twelve months. Neither number is more "correct" than the other β€” they're measuring different things. But an investor who only sees the folio growth headline is missing half the picture, and an investor who only sees a fund's trailing 1-year or 3-year return is missing the same half.

This is exactly the gap FundMatrix Stability Scores and weekly Pulse monitoring exist to fill: not to tell you whether to buy or sell, but to make sure the "everyone else is buying" signal and the "is this fund actually behaving consistently" signal are both visible before you decide anything.
